The golden compass…is it really that golden.

2 05 2009

My sister is letting me muse her laptop cause my laptop charger is not working:(.

You know what. I hate the golden compass. No offence to anyone and I know that it was showed a few years ago and this is a late report but I really dislike the Golden Compass.

Everyone says the Golden Compass is against Christianity but that is not the reason why I dislike it so much. Looking at it with a drama/theater back ground ( even though it is not a stage show), I just can’t see thee big hit factor about this big hit wonder.

The begining and the end I will admit are my favorite parts of the show. I am intriguted by the demons and this magical world that Dust connects us to. I love the end when they have the big shown and help the kids escape and she flies of in this air machine to find her father. What I seriously can’t stand is everything in the middle! The transitioning is completely off. OK lets go step by step.

She goes stay with her so called mum. Then she realises her mum is the head of the goblers. Then she runs away and the people she used to live  take her to the middle of the ocean as a part of a bigger thing all together. They find her friend without his demon. The polar bear fights for his crown. Yeah then its the end.

Then they keep going on about this propercy. WHAT IS IT? WE THE AUDIENCE DO NOT KNOW!!!

Why is her mum the head pf the goblers?

Why is her mum going to kill her dad?

How come nicole kidmans demon is a monkey!

all these questions the movie has yet to answer.

What is more?  There hasnt been plans for a second movie….

Stuff you didn’t know about the holidays

My English Assignment.

12 03 2009

I did pretty well, infact, I am one of the top few. So I figured, I put up my WONDERFUL work for everyone to see. I think that it is also pretty relevant to our times.

“The Internet has made the world much smaller.” Do you agree?

My answer:

From New York to Russia, China to Peru and Singapore to Canada, everyone around the globe would have heard of the Internet. People know what Paris looks like, without catching a plane to France. They can even make new friends without ever meeting the real deal. I could even tell you what is happening at Google headquarters when no local newspaper or news television programmes have any information on the current situation. Indeed, the earth is rather large but the world is a lot smaller than we think.

The Internet gives on many opportunities to interact with people on the other side of the world. Online chatrooms, websites like Friendster and Facebook and even blogs allow one to interact with others. Chatrooms, which include the various Instant Message programmes like Yahoo.com, allow immediate interaction between two or more people from different parts of the globe. These chatrooms allow one to feel part of an actual conversation, with others and learn more about the different values, cultures and countries. Interaction websites allow further communication and interaction. Facebook allows members to exchange virtual gifts, take quizzes and leave comments. Blogs also allow one to further understand the blogger and read about experiences in that person’s life.

The Internet also allows one to be globally aware. One is able to research more about a particular event currently happening in the world, or read more about the culture’s and coustumes of different countries. One can even read more about current affairs from the Internet than what is provided on local news.

Internet access is available almost anywhere around the world, as long as one has an Internet server. The fact that almost anyone can access it means that different people can put up pictures, videos and even articles about places they have visited, Governments and airlines even put up information of new policies or even flight information on their respective websites. Not only does one not have to travel the world to see it, one can also plan their next vacation. They can even pay their credit card and phone bills without leaving the house. The Internet also makes it convient for people to work form home. They would just need to submit their work using the e-mail service.

While on the Internet, one may not be about to fully experience the place online. However, the Internet still provides one the gist of a country, place or experience and if one wishes to go there, one may choose to. Some, though, may not be financially blessed as others and may not get the opportunity to travel. Websites of countries and places give them a good idea of how the experience may be like.

The Internet has, indeed, mad the world smaller. We just have to log on and we can read about the lives of people who live half way across the world. We feel close to others when we interact with or read about them. That is what the Internet provides us, the closeness to those we interact with and yet live miles away. It is the closeness we share with others that makes the world much smaller.

I got 21/30. But then again….that was the highest if I’m not wrong.

International Women’s day

10 03 2009

Last Sunday, 8 of March, was International Women’s Day and since it was a special day, I wanted to do a special post on a special lady. Sadly, I wasn’t very much inspired. However, on International Women’s Day, instead of embracing the joys of being a woman, my cousin, a friend and myself exposed our flaws, faults and regrets that we, as women, have made.

Many of what that conversation is secret and will remain secret. However, the fact that we didn’t celebrate our womanhood to me came as a shock. We did one thing no woman has the pleasure of doing.

Accepting her flaws. Her faults. The things in her life she wishes she could change. Ladies, come on. We all have to admit it someday. Why not sooner? We aren’t perfect. We are fully human.

On international woman’s day, while many spent their day enjoying being a woman, I embraced that I am not perfect. That I have flaws. The sooner I told myself that, the better I felt. So ladies, what if you have a bad hair day? Or if everyone you are working with thinks you have this major crush on your colleague? You are merely a human being.

In the past women weren’t given high expectations. Now, we try to reach expectations which are beyond us. You are human. Not an alien. Not a superhuman. A NORMAL human being, stop living up to the expectations of others and always do the right thing.

Now, if you can excuse me. I need to go practise what I preach.

Self help??? Seriously???

5 03 2009

You know, there are so many books and videos and who knows what else out there which  tell people how to do stuff. Like the Idiots guide or other self help books. I say self help books because they tell you how you can be a better person or how to boost yourself confidence.

I stubbled onto this channel on youtube Howcast. It is pretty god actually. It is organised and it tells you how to do technical stuff ( I would listen to all the technical stuff if I were you).  But then I saw this video and I subscribed. Not because I need it, just because it got really funny.

How to flirt?
How to escape a bad party conversation?
How to make a move while watching a movie?

Excuse me? We are the ones who have all the knowledge of the world. WHY ARE OTHER PEOPLE TEACHING US HOW TO PICK UP A DATE?

Question Mark

Sigh.

You know, we have all the knowledge in the world. We just lack the confidence to show it.

And yes, you can quote me.

Know yourself better.

I love personality test. I love sharing them. Enjoy.

http://www.quizbox.com/personality/test82.aspx

My Results:

Your view on yourself:

Other people find you very interesting, but you are really hiding your true self. Your friends love you because you are a good listener. They’ll probably still love you if you learn to be yourself with them.

The type of girlfriend/boyfriend you are looking for:

You are not looking merely for a girl/boyfriend – you are looking for your life partner. Perhaps you should be more open-minded about who you spend time with. The person you are looking for might hide their charm under their exterior.

Your readiness to commit to a relationship:

You are ready to commit as soon as you meet the right person. And you believe you will pretty much know as soon as you might that person.

The seriousness of your love:

Your have very sensible tactics when approaching the opposite sex. In many ways people find your straightforwardness attractive, so you will find yourself with plenty of dates.

Your views on education

You may not like to study but you have many practical ideas. You listen to your own instincts and tend to follow your heart, so you will probably end up with an unusual job.

The right job for you:

You’re a practical person and will choose a secure job with a steady income. Knowing what you like to do is important. Find a regular job doing just that and you’ll be set for life.

How do you view success:

You are afraid of failure and scared to have a go at the career you would like to have in case you don’t succeed. Don’t give up when you haven’t yet even started! Be courageous.

What are you most afraid of:

You are afraid of having no one to rely on in times of trouble. You don’t ever want to be unable to take care of yourself. Independence is important to you.

Who is your true self:

You are mature, reasonable, honest and give good advice. People ask for your comments on all sorts of different issues. Sometimes you might find yourself in a dilemma when trapped with a problem, which your heart rather than your head needs to solve

Yeah, it is accurate. Me is just up there right now, exposed to the world.

Mardi Gras 1

I’m dramatic too by the way! lol

What it takes to be a leader!

21 02 2009

Every time my principal talks to my school, she always mention the words ‘leader’ and ‘inspire’ and she will always throw in the occassional ‘please girls!’ I guess, my the reactions of my school mates, that most find her morning lectures are scholdings. I would beg to differ. Ms Martens ( a principal like this deserves credit doesn’t she?) has granted us our greatest wish we wanted for years. To be treated like an adult, to be treated with some maturity. And by the looks of it, many still think we did something wrong.

I love it when my Principal or Vice-Principal talks to us. I don’t take them as boring lectures about our behaviour or our attitude. Most of the time I don’t see it as we did something wrong. In school, you are suppose to make mistakes and learn from them. No point NOT learning.

Back to my point. My principal always tells us to be leaders. Easy right?WRONG. According to her, to be a leader, you need to inspire, you need to be true, you need to be responsible. You need to have this long list of qualities to be a leader. Let me brea it down which I feel is the most important one.

You need to inspire. You need to motivate the people you are working with to do what you want them to do. You need to inspire for people to do something. Anything. This applies to everything and not just work and school. When you blog about inspiring things and situations and you make someone want to do something, you are a leader.

So go on everyone. Be leaders of the world.

Inspire. Roll

Our ever-changing future

10 02 2009

So today, my vice principal, Ms Teo gave the upper secondary students a talk about our future and charecter development in SAC. I be perfectly honest, I love Ms Teo. She, to me, is such an inspirational speaker. She makes me want to stand up and do something about myself. Unlike Ms Martens, she really inspires me ( No offence Ms Martens. It is not that you’re not inspirational. It is just that your straight to the point and that kind of scares me….).  I recall her tell us everything to survive in our ever changing world. Now you see it is scary as hell but after that 55 minutes of Ms Teo preparing us for the real world, I felt inspirated, so inspirated that I wouldn’t mind being the one freezing hell over.

She asked us to remember 4 important points. She calls them the 4 Ls. NO! They do NOT stand for lame, loser, latargic or liar. They stand for Learn, Live, Lead and Leap.

Learn:- No matter what age you are, YOU LEARN EVERY DAY! Even if you are 100 you are still learning! Hey, younger generation, things HAVE changed since 100 years ago!  Your grandparents are still learning every single day.

Live:- “When you practice what you preach.” The most brilliant lyrics by The Black Eye Peas.  After you learn, you have to react. Lets say I tell you global warming is going to destroy all life on earth. You aren’t going to sit there and do nothing but HELP THE PROCESS OF GLOBAL WARMING! You are going to do something! Unless, of course you have something against all man kind!

Lead:- This does not nesscessarily apply to people holding leadership positions. This goes out to every one. When you stand up for what you believe, you are leading. You believe in letting everyone have a say in a conversation. If someone is excluded, you speak up and stand up for what you believe in. That person might actually have something good to say! Or if you see someone littering, tell them “Hey, the EMPTY BIN is right next to you!”

Leap:- This requires some reflection. After you live, you have to reflect. Did was what I did suitable behavior? When you reflected that is when you take a leap towards the kind of person you want to be.

Tada! The 4 Ls. Thank you Ms Teo for being so inspirational.

Oh by the way. below is the video she showed us during the talk. Take a look and leave your comments.

My memoirs

3 01 2009

Yeah I was watching Memoirs of a Geisha. Hence the tittle.  Her story is sad and yet very much inspiring. I thought I just…ramble. Don’t really have much to blog about now so yeah…rants and rambles now.

Sigh. When You think of the word ‘memoir’, well right about now, the movie stated above would come to your mind. Some poor little girl taken from family and grew up to be some one respected or well liked or well known. Why doesn’t anyone think of their own lives? Memoirs means an autobiography. An account of events in a person’s life. A journal so to speak. A journal of a typical teen girl would be one of the most random thing in the world. My memoirs aren’t far from that. But the one thing I like about memoirs and about reading memoirs or journals are the scandals. There are scandals in every ones life. You. Me. The person in the other room. Everyone has a scandal and a thing or two which they aren’t proud off.

Hey, we are only human. Reading memoirs of others, we don’t realise that they are human too. Memoir of a real human, not an alien. When we watch movies based on a a true story, we don’t realise that they are true. We can’t imagine several hundreds of scenarios being true. Sometimes we look at our own lives and we just wonder what we did to get ourselves there.

I am in the position currently. I’m just pondering about my memoir. It isn’t the most grand or exciting. But it is human. I am proud to say that…

It is human…

what about your memoir?

my end of year letter(2008)

31 12 2008

A couple of months we had to write a letter to the Archbishop on why we should get confirmed. My English teacher also encouraged us to write letters to ourselves so we can read back and learn and wonder and aim and dream and live.

This is my letter to you. It my ending of the year letter of 2008.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear readers and people of the world,
Hi. My name is Cheyenne Alexandria Anastasia Phillips.
I always write a letter to myself at the end of every year. I write a letter to myself writing some experiences and set expectations for the next year. I don’t know if I should be including them but I woudl like to so that maybe, just may be, everyone might get something out of it.
Firstly, I didn’t make Drama O levels class. Actually I did, my teacher advised me to stop the class because I wasn’t making the practical grade. She expected my theory to be better but since I never took the exam I wouldn’t know, now would I. However, the day she spoke to me about stopping the class was the same day I broke down in front of her. For the first time in my secondary school life, my teacher saw me cry.  That helped me a lot really. She knew I wanted it. I wanted it more than a lot of the other girls wanted it. And a week later, I gave it up. Dumb ass me right. No actually. I did get something out of it. I never did well in Drama because of my emotions. I couldn’t play sad or serious roles. I was a blank face. Black ink on White paper. That just opened me and several months later, I broke down in front of my Drama CCA girls. We were having a discussion with our instructor and I broke down. That helped me. The moment people saw me weak  and not judge, I could be weak willingly. I could play sad, serious roles which was good. I have to have a range. Time to develop it.
I had a Drama junior leave too. She left due to her dad getting transferred. She showed me that it is ok to embressed when you are acting. Because you need to when you are acting. If you can’t do silly things and want to be insecure about everything, you are going to fail on stage. And just a couple of weeks she before she left, she thought me that.  Thank you Aisha. Will come down and visit you.
Also, recently, I’ve left my head get into the clouds. You can say I’ve had bit of a holiday romance. Well, I am putting my love life on hold…again. Why am I telling you this? Very simple. I have a major national exam coming up this year and to have a love life right about now would just spoil my chances of having the future I want. Hey, I don’t know who I’m suppose to be at 15 right? LOL.  I don’t want to spoil my chances at anything just like how I watched some of my cousins do ( ok just one cousins). Put what is important first. That is what is important. Now, my studies are important. So must concentrate.
Well, economy doesn’t seem to be good. However, Singapore is said to be one of the 3 countries to be able to withstand it. So Yeah.
I don’t know. I’m reading about it.
Anyways, wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy new year to all.
Hope you have a good new year.
With many regards,
Cheyenne Phillips
